To all concerned,
The most recent outbreak of Coronavirus in China is the subject of significant concern enough to merit a meeting of the World Health Organization in Geneva Switzerland. There have been at least 17 deaths attributed to this virus. On January 23, USA TODAY reported that “The head of the World Health Organization said Wednesday its emergency committee needed more information before it was ready to declare the deadly global coronavirus virus outbreak a public health emergency, even as the hard-hit Chinese city of Wuhan shut down all air and train traffic to try to contain its spread.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/01/22/wuhan-china-coronavirus-outbreak-death-toll-public-health-emergency/4539750002/. Meanwhile this morning, the New York Times reports that China has expanded travel restrictions to 2 more cities as the outbreak grows. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/world/asia/china-coronavirus.html?campaign_id=60&instance_id=0&segment_id=20565&user_id=26351c8202441f64d429ffac4445e987®i_id=101250646. I have consulted the Center for Disease Control for direct information. While they have conveyed the risk of infection through the student exchange program travel is low, there is also undoubtedly increased risk because of the potential exposure of international travel. Venus Middle School has been very excited to host our wonderful guests from Zhangjiagang. However, in the best interest of the health of both our guests from China and our own students and community, I feel it is prudent to cancel the spring 2020 student visit from China. This would protect our friends in Zhangjiagang from potential exposure through airport and airplane travel, as well as protect our Venus community from the same dangers. I eagerly look forward to re-scheduling the student exchange for a date in the near future, when the health concern is contained. My goal would be to allow these same students to make this trip, possibly even as early as fall of 2020. Sincerely, James Hopper Superintendent, Venus ISD. Dear Parent or Guardian:
Cold and flu season is upon us and we have already had several students out of school with colds, the flu and strep throat. To prevent widespread flu/strep throat in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines. Consider keeping your child home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Thank you for helping to make this school year as healthy as possible.
