The Venus ISD Child Nutrition Department will be serving free meals to kids 18 and younger at Venus Elementary School from June 3-June 27 (Monday-Thursday only). Breakfast is served from 7:30-8 AM and Lunch is served from 11:30-12:30 PM. For more information, call 972-366-3642. 1. Freedom Remember how excited you were when you were school-aged, and the summer was approaching? The thought of having summer off to do nothing was thrilling. Substitute teachers get to relive this feeling all the time. As a Substitute, you can enjoy working during the months of August to late May, and relish in your free time and do so as you please in the month off. If you are a parent, this flexibility is particularly attractive and makes planning vacations easy. With you children being available the same time as you, you can plan all sorts of fun, family activities that will increase bonding and build lasting memories that you otherwise may not be able to build with a 9 to 5 job. 2. Variety If you are someone who gets bored easily, substitute teaching is right up you alley. As a substitute, you get the rare opportunity to teach in different environments most days of your job. One day you could be in Physical Education playing basketball with a group of rowdy high school kids, the next you could be singing ABC’s in a Kindergarten classroom. The beauty of being a substitute is you get to experience it all, and every day is new and exciting. This does mean that being able to switch tracks and understand a variety of different subject matters will be necessary. However, if you are looking for a career that will challenge you a little and continuously be a fun experience, you can count on substitute teaching to afford you this opportunity. 3. Flexible Hours While one would typically not thing of substitute teachers being their own bosses and making their own schedules, the truth is – they are! Creating your own scheduled is based on when you want to work, and not on when your boss say so, is a huge benefit of substitute teaching. Conversely, if you are in need of some extra cash, scheduling as much work as possible to help increase your earnings is possible with substitute teaching. How often you work is all up to you and based on your schedule and needs. 4. Make a Difference It’s hard to believe that there’s a job out there that offers flexibility and allows you to make a difference in your local community, but there is! Every day you enter a classroom as a substitute teacher, you make a difference in students’ lives even if you don’t realize it at the time. You see, great substitute teachers do so much more than follow a lesson plan. They ensure quality education continues while the regular teacher is absent. Even if you only substitute teach in a classroom for a week or a day, you keep those students on track and motivated. And there’s no better feeling at the end of the day than knowing you helped a student understand a complex scientific theory or solve a math problem that was stumping them. Now that you realize the benefits of becoming a substitute teacher, you may have some more questions such as, how do I become a substitute teacher and when can I get started? Take the first steps to becoming a substitute teacher by contacting Cindy Younger, Benefits and Substitute Specialist for Venus ISD at (972) 366-3448. Substitute Requirements
