Subject: Notice about Viral Meningitis Dear Parent or Guardian: This morning I was made aware of a medical concern and I immediately contacted the Texas Department of Health. TDoH has assured me that this notice is not required, however, in the interest of keeping parents and staff informed, I am sharing this information with you regarding an employee of our school district who has viral meningitis. This is an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord, caused by a virus. Unlike bacterial meningitis, viral meningitis is almost never transmitted directly from one person to another. Symptoms of meningitis include:
Viral meningitis is almost never fatal. Although it causes a very severe illness for a week or more, it never leaves any permanent disability. If anyone has symptoms of this disease, they need to see a health care provider immediately, to rule out bacterial meningitis. Initial symptoms are similar for viral and bacterial meningitis. Parents of diaper-age children should take extra caution when changing diapers. Careful handwashing and cleaning of surfaces will prevent others from getting sick. Everyone should be encouraged to wash their hands after using the bathroom. If you have concerns or questions contact your health care provider.
Atentamente, Alan R. Oakley Interim Superintendent VenusISD |
