Featured Employee: Randall Buck

7/19/2016

Picture
Venus ISD’s current featured employee is Venus High School Principal, Randall Buck.  Mr. Buck is in his 22nd year in education, his 14th year with Venus ISD, and 18th year as an active member of the Venus community. VISD has been privileged to have Mr. Buck serve as a social studies teacher, football and baseball coach, VMS Assistant Principal, VMS Principal, and VHS Principal.  Mr. Buck has applied his impeccable work ethic by investing into the lives of the students, teachers, and administrators. During his time as VHS Principal, Mr. Buck has built a first-class administrative team that is responsive to the needs of their teachers and students, making Venus High School a premier learning institution.

Randall Buck was raised in Cameron, Texas by hard working parents. His father worked for the soil conservation service and his mother stayed at home with her children until she became a teacher.  The middle child of three boys, all of whom would became teachers, Randall played sports throughout his childhood, through a combination of sports, family, and school he developed keen interests in history, financial management, and especially baseball.  After graduating from Cameron HS in 1990, his passion for baseball led him to play for Blinn College and later Tarleton State University.  Playing collegiate baseball had a lasting impact on Randall; the ready-made family of the team deeply engrained in him the values of teamwork and taking care of each other.  In 1994, he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Sports Studies with a Minor in History from Tarleton.

During the summer, Mr. Buck accepted a teacher/coach position with Quinlan Ford ISD.  His time at Quinlan was especially productive, since that is where he met the future Mrs. Buck. Towards the end of his third year at Quinlan, Randall and Kim were married.  As any self-respecting history enthusiast would, Mr. Buck took his new wife on a honeymoon to Washington DC.  While in Washington DC, Randall received a call from then Venus High School Principal, Robert White, letting him know there was a vacancy on his campus. Mr. Buck realized the potential in Venus becoming a long term home for their new family, so the Bucks chose to end their honeymoon early in order to accept the teaching position in Venus.

During his first stint with Venus ISD, Mr. Buck taught history and coached football and baseball.  At that time, real estate in Venus was an outstanding value compared to nearby towns, and Mr. Buck, ever the prudent money manager, chose to build a house in the city of Venus and invest his family in the community.  After a brief career change into financial planning, Mr. Buck returned to education at Midlothian Middle School working with former VMS Administrator, Brian Blackwell. Mr. Buck discovered a passion for making connections with the most challenging of students and rekindled his excitement for teaching.  After three fulfilling years in Midlothian, the head baseball coaching position at Venus opened up and Mr. Buck was able to come back home.

Just as his path to making Venus ISD his permanent home was filled with challenges and rewards, his path into administration would be as well.  Randall was able to earn his master’s degree and administrator certification in a year and a half. Ms. McCallum was the VMS Principal and hired Mr. Buck to be her Assistant Principal.  After a change in campus leadership Mr. Buck and Mrs. Rebecca Harris, ,VISD Counselor and District Testing Coordinator, helped to hire Mrs. Jill Talamantez as the VMS Principal. Little by little, things began to change. Minds were slowly opened to new ideas and hearts were opened to become more understanding of other perspectives. The seeds that were planted during the three years as an administrative team at VMS are still bearing fruit and improving VISD students’ lives today.

Mr. Buck served as the VMS Principal for four years, and is now starting his third year as the Principal of Venus High School.  As a leader, Mr. Buck values learning from those around him.  Experience has shown him how valuable input from others can be.  He knows the value of having a balanced administrative team and how it can pay great dividends to the teachers and students of a campus.  It should come as no surprise that Mr. Buck and his staff consistently grow teachers to reach their potential.  Numerous VISD teachers have taken their first steps into administration under the guidance of Mr. Buck.  He believes that friends, coworkers, students deserve to receive his best effort.  Little did he expect to be on the receiving end of the best efforts of many Venus community members during his recent battle with cancer.

Randall feels his battle with cancer left him and his family greatly enriched from the wealth of support they received from the Venus community and VISD employees.  He appreciates the personal support from Gerrell Leonard, Billy Roten, David Sulak, Terry Spray, Gary Brown, and countless others. It reminds him why they chose Venus in the first place.  Venus is a place that both preaches and practices FAMILY!  People are consistently ready and waiting to step up and take care of each other.  After Mr. Buck’s first surgery, the hospital staff said there were more people arriving to wait and pray with his family to such an extent that they had to set aside a separate waiting room to host everyone.  One hospital staff member later told Mr. Buck that she fondly remembers that people continually leaving his hospital room in laughter.  There was not sense of despair or sadness, but off happiness and hope.  Just as the Buck’s chose Venus, Venus chose the Bucks.

Mr. Buck says that cancer has changed him for the better. He is very hesitant to say that cancer was a blessing, but there is no doubt that he was greatly blessed by the people of Venus that gave of themselves for his family’s benefit. Cancer taught what a lifetime worth of experiences could not and Mr. Buck is thankful to have the perspective that he has now. One would be hard pressed to imagine Venus TX without Mr. Buck, and we are thankful for his victory in the battle with cancer.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
When your work and your family life are so closely intertwined, it’s difficult to define what spare time really is!  On his off time, Mr. Buck enjoys spending time at the family farm in Palestine.  Family is the number one priority and much of their time is dedicated to enabling their kids, Makayla and Cameron, to pursue their sports endeavors.

Who would you like to brag on?
Kim Buck is the rock that holds everything together.  He’s been blessed enough in Venus that it has been the kind of place that you’re proud to have your wife work.  She is the light of his life.  She is a strong woman and has her own way of doing things.  She doesn’t allow her husband being the HS principal change that!

The VHS staff as a whole is more than worthy of a brag.  Their willingness to dig in and take care of each other every time they have the chance speaks volumes about their character.  There are no better people to have teaching our kids.

What’s your favorite memory as a Bulldog?
Mr. Buck recounts a host of great memories during his time with VISD; the baseball team being down by 6 runs in the 7th inning and coming back to beat Stephenville in the playoffs, the Lady Bulldogs basketball game vs Alvarado when we made a shot at the buzzer to send it into overtime, cooking burgers (and veggie burgers) for teacher appreciation week, and his 8th grade history class duck walking around the hallway for a lesson activity.  There are many great memories as a Bulldog, but one that brings him great pride is his wife, Kim, being hired as the VMS Principal, making his entire family Bulldogs.

The VHS focus for the 16-17 school year is “every day, every child, every moment.”  You never know what moment is going to matter to a student, so their goal is to try and make every moment impactful and purposeful for our students.  The more memorable moments that we can create for our students, the more likely they will remember the truly valuable lessons they are taught.  When Mr. Buck interviews potential employees, he tells them that they are not applying to work at a job, they are applying to work in his home, and they are applying for the privilege to be a part of the Bulldog family.  Nobody has preached the Bulldog message more often or as loudly as Mr. Buck.  He believes in being a Bulldog from sun up to sun down, and doing whatever it takes to make Venus a better place.  We are thankful for every moment he has been with VISD to make a difference in the lives of the students, teachers, and families of Venus ISD.
