Featured Employee: Eddie Smallwood

9/10/2015

Picture
Venus ISD’s Featured Employee this month is VHS Agriculture Science teacher, Mr. Eddie Smallwood.  The district has been privileged to have Mr.Smallwood for the last five of his 42 years in education.  In that time, he has made a positive impact by building hard working, young people of character in the Agriculture Science program.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
Mr. Smallwood enjoys spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.  He is married to the WONDERFUL Mrs. Vickie Smallwood, who helps our Venus Elementary students make great strides in scholarship in the VES Learning Lab.  They have four children, Wade, Spencer, Sloan, and Megan, who just so happens to be Venus ISD’s Gifted & Talented and 504 Coordinator.  Mr. Smallwood also enjoys team roping with his son Spencer both competitively and for fun with their church.

What inspires you?
Mr. Smallwood is greatly inspired by seeing his students eyes light up when they learn something new.  They get a smile on their face and you know with certainty they have made an important connection.  Seeing his students achieve success with their FFA projects after months of hard work is especially inspiring for him as well.  Students gaining pride in their work is a powerful sight to behold.

Which coworkers inspire you?
Mr. David Hall, a VHS Math teacher, inspires Mr. Smallwood with his genuine interest in the lives of his students.  Students speak very highly of him because he builds solid relationships with them.

Mrs. Seal inspires him as well, because she took on the very challenging task of being an agriculture teacher.  She cares deeply about her students and it shows in their learning.  Mr. Smallwood credits Mrs. Seal as being the BEST teaching partner he’s ever had in his 42 years in the classroom and he has had some great teaching partners.

Which coworker needs to be bragged on?
Mr. Smallwood would like to brag on Mr. Buck for having a positive attitude.  Mr. Buck works to make VHS an exciting and happy place to be. His amazing character and dedication to the students and staff shows daily.

What experiences at VISD have impacted you?
The extent to which everyone at VISD has stepped up their game in the past five years has been awe inspiring.  All aspects of the district have consistently performed at higher levels each year, to include One Act Play, Band, Athlecics, FFA, and academics.  The winning culture in Venus has taken root.  Mr. Smallwood’s perspective is “if we’re rolling rocks down the road, I’m going to try to beat you at it."  Since Mr. Smallwood came to VHS, quality participation in Ag has greatly increased; people know when we go to a stock show because we go to win.
Mr. Smallwood knows that his students are hungry for success and he equips them for that and much more.  He teaches more than just the state standards when he greets his students with a firm handshake and a warm greeting at the beginning of each class period.

We are thankful that Mr. Smallwood’s students are learning to do nothing half way, always the right way.
