Parents, help your child access VISD technology!

10/28/2015

Venus ISD now has it's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) available to be signed on Skyward Family Access. It is important that parents/guardians digitally sign the AUP in order for your student to be able to access district technology such as computers, the internet, and academic software.  The AUP keeps the district in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act,
Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, as well as ensuring that you as the parent/guardian are aware of your student's potential use of technology at school. Please log in to your Family Access account and select On Line Forms tab, answer the questions at the bottom of the form and click submit.  See the PDF below for detailed instructions.

AUP Family Access Instructions

The form will be available until Nov 20th. Any student not having a form when we return from Thanksgiving break will have all computer and internet privileges revoked until their parent/guardian digitally signs the AUP in Skyward Family Access. If you do not have your Family Access log in information please contact your student's Campus Registrar.  Their contact information is below:

VHS- Barbara Brummett 972-366-8815 barbarab@venusisd.net
VMS - Treva Rawlinson 972-366-3358 trawlinson@venusisd.net
VES- Shelly Michael  972-366-3748 smichael@venusisd.net
VPS- Lizbeth Groo 972-366-3268 lgroo@venusisd.net
VISD- Deanne Nettik 972-366-3448 dnettik@venusisd.net

If you do not have access to a computer, the internet, or are unable to electronically sign the AUP through Skyward Family Access, the district will be providing the opportunity to use our computers and internet.  More information on this will be posted to this web page as it becomes available.

Be Aware: Common School Sickness Facts

10/16/2015

We are quickly entering the part of the year where student absences due to illness increase.  It is important that students attend school so they can learn, but it is most important that our students are healthy; healthy learners are effective learners.  Below are some common sicknesses that impact many students across the Texas annually.  If you feel that your student might have any of them, please seek medical attention.

Bacterial Meningitis

This type of meningitis is caused from bacteria such as Neisseria meningitdis and Streptococcus, and can cause life-threatening infections that need immediate medical attention.
Symptoms:
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia), and
  • Altered mental status (confusion).
Prevention:
The most effective way to protect you and your child against certain types of bacterial meningitis is to complete the recommended vaccine schedule. There are vaccines for three types of bacteria that can cause meningitis, Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus), Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib).

Influenza

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death.
Symptoms:
  • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
Prevention:
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.  Try to avoid close contact with sick people.  Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.  Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.  Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

Stomach Flu

Norovirus, commonly known as Stomach Flu, is a very contagious virus. You can get norovirus from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute gastroenteritis). This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up.
Symptoms:
  • diarrhea
  • throwing up
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
Prevention:
Practice proper hand hygiene.  Wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly.  When you are sick, do not prepare food or care for others who are sick.  Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces.  Wash laundry thoroughly.

Viral Meningitis

This type of meningitis is caused by viruses such as enteroviruses, arboviruses, and herpes simplex viruses.  It is serious, but less severe than bacterial meningitis, and people with normal immune systems usually get better on their own.
Symptoms:
  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Poor eating
  • Lethargy (a lack of energy)
Prevention:
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, or coughing or blowing your nose.  Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.  Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.  Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your hands.  Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.  Stay home when you are sick.

Strep Throat

Strep throat is a common type of sore throat in children, but it's not very common in adults.  Viruses, bacteria, allergens, environmental irritants (such as cigarette smoke), chronic postnasal drip and fungi can all cause a sore throat. While many sore throats will get better without treatment, some throat infections—including strep throat—may need antibiotic treatment.
Symptoms:
  • Sore throat, usually starts quickly and can cause severe pain when swallowing
  • A fever (101°F or above)
  • Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
  • Tiny red spots (petechiae) on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth  (the soft or hard palate)
  • Headache, nausea, or vomiting
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Body aches or rash
Prevention:
The best way to keep from getting strep throat is to wash your hands often and avoid sharing eating utensils, like forks or cups. It is especially important for anyone with a sore throat to wash their hands often and cover their mouth when coughing and sneezing. There is no vaccine to prevent strep throat.
