I am truly excited to be the next superintendent at Venus ISD, and to have the privilege of leading a fantastic group of educators.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about who I am and what I believe.

Who I Am:
I have been married to my wonderful wife, Linda Marie, for 37 amazing years, and we are blessed to have two children and two grandchildren.  Outdoor activities are a source of great joy; I enjoy lifting, and love to spend time on trails hiking, running, fast-packing and ultra-trail running. I want to be an accomplished sailboat operator someday. I love competition, regardless of what the nature of it is. My faith in God is my firm foundation as well as my daily inspiration.

My Professional Philosophy:
Education is the axis upon which a society rotates. Except for our worship of God and our service to one another, it is the utmost priority.

What I Believe:
I take the role of professional educator seriously and strive to be the best I can be. I am also a lifelong learner. More than a cliché, I believe that anyone who is truly an educator carries this characteristic. Leaders are readers, and I believe that every instructor of young people is a leader. I will frequently ask you what you are reading, and will readily share with you what I am reading. In that way we augment each other’s learning.
  • I believe in actions that reflect values. If we say that we value certain things, we should have a resulting trail of our actions that can be traced straight to those stated values. If there are no such actions, one has to question the validity of the stated belief. Conversely, our actions should not be random in nature. If we are considering an action, yet can find no corresponding value or stated reason, this should be a caution flag to consider a different course. With each of the belief statements below, I can reference specific actions that I have implemented stemming from these fundamental beliefs. While this isn’t all I believe in, it is a start.
  • I believe in the value of early childhood education. This is a belief that is grounded in volumes of solid research and beyond that, just good common sense.
  • I believe in the value of a good solid child nutrition program. Affording each child the time in the day to start with a breakfast is critical.
  • I believe that extra-curricular activities are an integral part of the overall curriculum.
  • I believe in the value of the Fine Arts for the stimulation of brain development leading toward creativity in problem solving.
  • I believe in the power of data. Data will not give us answers, but it will make us ask questions. If we ask the right questions, and diligently and discerningly pursue them we will arrive at our answers.
  • I believe in the value of true teacher collaboration on the behalf of students. Teachers should be afforded the time, tools and training to maximize opportunities to collaborate through Professional Learning Communities.
  • I believe in the value of accountability for all.
  • I believe in the value of creating the best teaching/working environment possible, built on mutual respect and professionalism.
  • I believe in the value of the TEAM. Every Team member has their role and each role is critical to the organization.
  • I believe in listening to those in the trenches for perspective in all issues.
  • I believe in the value of a solid curriculum that is vertically and horizontally aligned and diligently followed, and monitored regularly for relevance.
  • I believe in the value of our students and staff learning to be adept at global interactions.
  • I believe in the value of school/community relations.
  • I believe in preparing students for THEIR future, not our past. Careers, College, Military, etc.
  • I believe in the value of playing an active role in changing our government to protect our interests and to make a better state and country.
But most of all, I believe in our students. There are no throw-aways. Not only CAN all children learn, all children in fact DO learn. It is our responsibility as facilitators of learning as opposed to presenters of knowledge to ensure that all students are learning what they should be learning and at the rate they should be learning it.
I am truly thankful for the opportunity to lead Venus ISD as we continue traditional values and embrace equally the blessings and challenges of growth.

-James Hopper
